Spanish Association of Musicians with Dystonia
Manuel López — The Left-Hand Pianist — y la Spanish Association of Musicians with Dystonia llevan la música allí donde más se necesita. Una historia de superación que transforma vidas.
The Association
Its mission goes beyond the clinical realm. The association works at the intersection of art, medicine and solidarity, organising awareness concerts in medical associations, music conservatories and major auditoriums.
Manuel López has performed on emblematic stages such as the Palau de la Música in Valencia, the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid and the medical associations of Madrid, Seville and Málaga. His personal story — overcoming focal dystonia and returning to play with his left hand — is the most powerful message in every concert.

Focal Dystonia
Focal dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that specifically affects musicians. It appears as involuntary and uncontrollable contractions in the fingers, hand or arm during musical performance, without any apparent physical injury.
It is a deceptive condition. It appears at the peak of technical mastery, in musicians with years of intensive study behind them. World-class pianists, guitarists, violinists and wind players have seen their careers abruptly interrupted by it. And yet it remains widely unknown even among medical professionals.
AEMD works actively to change this. Through awareness concerts in medical associations and talks in conservatories, Manuel López shares his direct testimony: how focal dystonia cut short his right-hand career and how, through treatment, dedication and love for the piano, he learned to play again with his left hand.
"Focal dystonia is not the end of music. It is the beginning of a deeper and braver relationship with it."

Some stories cannot be explained. They must be played.
For years, Manuel López has travelled across Spain with a concert unlike any other. It is not a conventional recital. It is an event. An experience in which the greatest music of all time and the purest emotion merge into a single act the audience never forgets — performed entirely with one hand.
The stages that have welcomed him speak for themselves.
2026 Tour — From Ludovico to Paco de Lucía
The repertoire is, in itself, an extraordinary journey. On stage, Manuel unfolds the heights of the classical piano repertoire — Chopin, Beethoven, Scriabin — with all the depth and technical demand those works require. The programme then moves towards Yiruma and Ludovico Einaudi, closing with Albéniz, Granados, Falla and the flamenco of Paco de Lucía as its final flourish.
When the final chord fades away, Manuel remains on stage and shares his personal story with the audience: how focal dystonia tried to silence him forever, and how his deepest conviction overcame everything.

Social Impact
Some concerts are more than concerts. They are acts of presence, dignity and hope. Under the motto "The love for the piano overcome everything.", Manuel López and AEMD regularly give charity performances for groups who rarely have the opportunity to sit in front of a grand piano.
People with physical and cognitive disabilities, musicians affected by focal dystonia, patients with stroke and acquired brain injury, blind people and young people in situations of social vulnerability: all of them find in Manuel’s concerts something that goes beyond music.
"When a concert ends and someone approaches you with tears in their eyes to tell you they have never felt anything like it, you understand why music exists. And why the association exists."

In each conservatory, Manuel López combines his piano performance with a clinical-musical talk that addresses the neurological mechanisms of focal dystonia, the risk factors of intensive study and the tools for early detection.
